Q & A

Man people are very confused by what is meant by the raw food lifestyle. I have compiled answers to some of the most common questions I have been asked.

Q:
What do you mean, you eat raw food?
A:

I realise that eating raw food is still an unusual concept in our society so I can understand the confusion. I eat simple plant life which has not been cooked i.e., a variety of raw green leaves, germinated seeds, pulses and grains known as sprouts; nuts and seeds and an abundance of fruit and vegetables.

Most importantly I don’t eat animal products i.e..meat or dairy, no cooked grains e.g. bread, rice, pasta etc. or any food that has been chemically processed.

The most relevant piece of information concerning the raw food diet is that nothing is heated above 118°F so the nutrients and components of the food are kept intact. This provides the highest quality nourishment resulting in extra energy and vitality, leaving you feeling radiant.

Q:
What happens when food is cooked above 118°F?
A:

Cooking food above this temperature changes the molecular structure of the food and destroys many of the components and nutrients. Vitamins and minerals are massively reduced; the enzyme and oxygen content of the food are destroyed and the food becomes acid-forming during digestion which upsets the acid/alkaline balance of the body. Free radicals and toxin levels are greatly increased due to the slow and difficult digestion and the natural antioxidants are not able to combat this excess. All of this results in poor health, disease and degeneration (for more details see Raw Food Info).

Once I discovered all this information it became obvious to me that raw plant life is the most perfect food we can consume. I have never enjoyed my food so much as I do now. Not only is it wonderful to eat but it leaves me feeling great inside and out. I feel happier, more vibrant and energised and more at peace with myself.

I look forward to helping you find the same joy in your food.

Q:
How can just food affect us so much?
A:

‘You are what you eat’. Although this is a concept we have heard many times, I feel that it is important we realise the absolute impact of nutrition on our lives. It is of course the very essence of our survival; so it’s not surprising that the food we eat can have such a dramatic effect on our lives.

I believe that when we obey the laws of nature by feeding ourselves with food we were designed to eat we come into harmony with the world in which we live. We become at peace with ourselves and at peace with each other. When we go against what nature intended by eating incorrect foods, there is discord, dis-ease, and disruption on all levels in our lives.

By changing your eating habits to this raw food diet you will soon notice the difference in yourself. You cannot help but change yourself quite profoundly in all aspects, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

With observation of myself and other people who have embraced this incredible lifestyle, I realise that this is quite simply, how the human species responds when given what it is designed to eat.

Q:
How can we know what we were designed to eat?
A:

There have been many studies carried out over the years on the internal workings of the different types of animals, i.e. those that eat meat, those that eat solely vegetables and those that eat a mixture.

There are many results that indicate that our intestines and colon are designed to digest vegetation rather than meat. There is still much controversy on this and many other aspects of the subject so I suggest you find out as much as possible so you can make your own decision.

However, I chose this way of living simply because, on a deep level, it feels right. After years of self awareness and self observation I can honestly say that eating raw food not only makes me feel physically great, but really does make me feel in harmony with nature and the world around me. Perhaps the best proof is found when we actually experience the lifestyle ourselves.

Q:
I love my food, won’t a vegetable diet be boring?
A:

I can truly say that now I really love my food, and I mean ‘love’ on every level. It’s not just the indulgent part of the brain that loves this raw plant life. Every organ of your body will ‘sing its praise’. Your cells will feel light and alive, every part of you will feel great, inside and out. That is truly loving your food!

Boring? It may sound limited but in reality the world of fruit and vegetables opens you up to limitless tastes, textures, colours and flavours and the possibilities of preparing these foods are endless.

There is a joy in eating fresh fruit and vegetables, seeds and nuts in their natural form. However there are also many ways to create inventive meals, often called raw gourmet food, that mimic conventional meals. There are many raw recipe books which show beautiful meals and how incredibly simple they are to prepare. The best ‘fast food’ on the planet.

During my raw food course I demonstrate how to prepare a three course lunch and then you have the pleasure of eating this delicious meal with all its amazing textures and flavours. “Seeing (and tasting) is believing.”

Q:
I’m very active – will I get enough nutrients to give me my energy?
A:

Yes, raw plant life is packet with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, oxygen, protein, fats etc. but most importantly they are still all ‘alive’ when you eat them. Cooking food either destroys or changes the molecule structure of the nutrients so the body can actually be starved of the necessary nourishment. However, raw food has all its nutrients intact and more readily and easily absorbed into the cells of your body creating all the nourishment you need for an active, healthy life.

Even if you have energy now, you will be amazed how much more you discover once you start to ‘go raw’. We know that food is our fuel and that food creates energy. Have you ever noticed how tired you feel after a heavy, cooked meal. Alarm bells should be ringing if this is the case.

Remember food = fuel = energy, so does your food/fuel give you energy? After eating a raw meal, the answer is most definitely – yes – you feel light, energised and raring to go.

Once you start to read about this way of eating you will discover also that there are many athletes, men and women who have found their performances greatly increased when embracing this raw lifestyle.

Surely we would all like to have a chance to enhance our own performance on all levels. The best way for you to find out is to try for yourself.

Q:
Where will I get my protein?
A:

Protein is found in the chlorophyll rich green leaves, also in many fruit and vegetables, nuts and seeds, and found in the germinated pulses, seeds and grains called sprouts.

Society puts a lot of importance in the amount of protein that is needed for good health. Although protein is an essential component of our diet, reports now show that too much protein can actually be detrimental.

Not only is there enough protein in plant life to suit all our needs, more importantly it is in a form that is easily assimilated, digested and absorbed. Animal protein has actually been found to be difficult for our internal organs to break down and takes longer to digest and pass through the body system.

If you are still concerned about the amount of protein found in this raw food lifestyle, take a long hard look at the animal kingdom: the horse, with its wonderful muscle contours and amazing strength and stamina, all gained from grass! The elephant: one of our largest and strongest animals – a raw vegan...!

Q:
I am interested in a healthier diet but do I have to be completely raw to get the benefits?
A:

No, you can change your eating habits as little or as much as you desire as long as you create a happy and healthy way of living. It is important that you obey your inner instincts without inner conflicts.

With self observation and awareness you will realise that whenever you add vibrant, uncooked foods into your diet you will feel great. Food that is made up of live healthy cells will feed our own cells with energy and life.

Equally you will also begin to observe that dull, heavy cooked foods will result in you feeling tired and sluggish.

I look forward to helping you to choose how much raw food you want to add to your diet at any given time, or how much cooked food you want to omit.

Any changes, no matter how small, that create a feeling of well being are of benefit. Once you start making changes to your eating habits and start to reap the results, who will know where it will end?

Q:
How will I have the discipline to change? – I enjoy my food too much to give anything up.
A:

Eating raw food is not about denial, it’s about giving yourself wonderful foods which you truly love. This is not a difficult or complex way of living. It is simplicity itself.

My role as a raw food coach is to show you how you can enjoy natural foods so much that you won’t want the heavy dull foods of a conventional diet.

I have never ‘given up’ any food, although I am now a totally raw vegan. What I mean by that is I have only stopped eating certain foods like meat, dairy products, wheat etc when I no longer wanted them. If you don’t actually want a food there is no forced discipline needed to stop eating it. I look forward to helping you find the way to change your eating habits as little or as much as you like, and how to achieve this without struggle.

Q:
What foods make up the raw plants diet?
A:
  1. The green leaves, containing life giving chlorophyll which gain their energy directly from the sun.
  2. The green stems, the fibrous structural part of the plant.
  3. the roots – the portion of the plant below ground
  4. Flowers – often an edible and colourful part of the plant designed to attract insects for pollination.
  5. Fruit – Usually sweet and fleshy part of the plant containing the seed or nut.
  6. Nuts and seeds – found in the centre of the fruit and can potentially grow into a new plant.
  7. Sea vegetation – sea plants which are rich in minerals obtained from the sea and ocean floor.
  8. Algae – various types found in fresh water lakes etc.

Q:
Is there a difference between a raw food diet and a living food diet?
A:

A raw food diet describes all diets that involve foods that haven’t been cooked. The word living is often applied to raw food to show that the nutrients and components are still intact i.e. alive and have not been destroyed by cooking. In this context all raw food is living.

However the ‘living food lifestyle’, a category within the raw food diet, is a way of eating advocated by the Hippocrates Health Institute in Florida, one of the founders of the living food lifestyle. It consists of raw vegan food and the word living refers to plants that are still growing when you eat them, for example:

  • Sprouted food – seeds, beans and grains which have been allowed to germinate with tiny shoots and roots
  • Sunflower greens, buckwheat greens etc – sprouts grown into small plants and are consumed once the first two leaves have appeared
  • Wheatgrass – wheat grain grown into grass and juiced

These living foods are at their earliest stages of their development and provide some of the highest quality nourishment possible.

As you will see from my daily food intake (see Day in the life of a raw food coach), my diet is closely linked to the Hippocrates concept of eating. I love the result of this living food lifestyle, it suits me to eat this way leaving me glad to be alive.

One of my roles as a raw food coach is to help you find which path you wish to take on this quest for a happy and vibrant life.

Q:
Do you take supplements?
A:

No, as a raw vegan I would not take supplements in the accepted way i.e. tablets or capsules containing individual vitamins or minerals. I do however ‘supplement’ my food with what are considered to be superfoods. These are whole foods which are packed with live, high quality nutrients.

An interesting question to ask yourself is why is there such a massive market in supplements? It is the average western cooked and processed diet which is deficient in these necessary nutrients. We know that cooking food destroys many important components, so it’s understandable that people, starved of vitamins, minerals etc, reach for the supplements.

Supplements however, sold in tablet or capsule form are not only thought to be unnecessary for a raw vegan but also undesirable. Nature has supplied all the food we need, packed with all the necessary nutrients for our perfect health. In any one piece of food e.g. an apple, there are 1000’s of phyto-nutrients which all work in conjunction with each other for their own benefit and ours. Natures plan seems obvious that they should be consumed in this way for their best digestion and absorption.

When these nutrients are separated out from each other and processed into tablet form, not only are they difficult to absorb individually but the molecular structure of the vitamins is altered. The oxygen and enzyme activity needed for digestion is also destroyed. Most importantly the body doesn’t necessarily recognise these ‘alien’ substances i.e. tablets, as a food and the immune system works hard to eradicate them. In trying to boost your immune system you may actually be wasting your immune resources.

Although it appears obvious that nature didn’t intend us to have to supplement our diet, it is possible that much of our fruit and vegetables could be lacking in nutrients. There are many causes e.g., soil depletion, air pollution, transportation from abroad, cold storage, artificial ripening etc.

These are some of the ‘supplements’ and superfoods which I have daily so I can be sure I receive as much goodness as possible:

  • Juice plus capsules – a ‘supplement’ which differs from the conventional form of supplements, they contain fruit and vegetables sun ripened and dried in their complete form and made into a powder/capsule
  • E-3 Live –in frozen liquid form – a blue green algae which is a simple fresh water plant life containing vital elements
  • Green powder superfood – a mixture of nutrient rich food, dried at low temperature so that all components are kept intact
  • Kelp powder – a dried sea plant with massive amounts of important minerals
  • Wheat grass juice – a true superfood. An amazing natural substance thought to be a complete food. (home-grown and juiced fresh).
